What photo will make a good painting?

The photo should be in focus or at least the main area of interest should be in focus.

The subject should have a sense of light that is either:
- a strong light source from the sun or a spotlight. (for example, giving the subject shadows, with maybe reflected or accent lights in the strong shadow areas can be very useful for figurative works or portraits).

- subtle light as in atmospheric lighting, creating a sense of mood or atmosphere.

If you are thinking of blending two photos together, make sure the light source is the same.

The use of a flash light straight on the subject is to be avoided.

The image should be:
- your photo and should not violate any copyright laws

- cropped, removing any unnecessary background/foreground, while still allowing for further cropping by the artist, if needed.

- interesting by having

  • a pleasant arrangement of shapes
  • some movement or action
  • some drama
  • a story to tell
  • a colour theme - warm, cool or a blend

Any subject will be considered.

Things we like to paint include:

  • Movement or implied movement.
  • Things that are animated or doing something.
  • People and animals that are NOT just staring at the camera (happy snaps).
  • The effect of light on shapes. This can vary from subtle, moody or atmospheric light to dramatic strong light.
  • Interesting formats, not just a standard rectangle.
  • Informal looking portraits or figurative pieces.
  • The extraordinary or unusual (a different view point).
  • A variety of brush strokes and effects.
  • Landscapes and vistas.
  • Floral arrangements, close up flowers and still life.
  • Street scenes and urban landscapes.
  • Seascapes.
  • Rural scenes.
